I found this book a little embarrassing to read in public, but once I started, I really couldn’t stop.
It is a work of unmasking the cynical double moral standards of the Victorian era: Love is at first sight–aka for no obvious reason. I think this is probably true, as parts really contain Wilde’s pithy commentary and style, but others are over dramatic in a way that Wilde’s writing isn’t.
I’ve enough literary tolerance for that. That’s how bad the ending was. This is not a case where the cheap edition just substitutes pulpier paper–for half the price you get half the book.
