He allegedly had an affinity to a woman called Plotia, but refused carnal relations with her. The breadth of its ideas and the corresponding lack of structure make for a challenging read, but a rich source for contemplation. It was in this dismal and foreboding setting that he began work writing this particular novel.
The basic straight-forward story is short and quickly told: Broch died in Equally opposing forces drawn kicking and screaming into an unholy unity. Which apparently reads as a poem in German, and a labour of, well, labour in English.
However, what he ‘s done in “Virgil” is try way too hard to convey some aesthetic notions of the ethics of art in a bombastic, repetitive, and downright treacly way. Plot is most obvious in mysteries, thrillers or adventure stories, where you read to find out what happens.
So, there is some consolation here that the English version is as close to the original intent as possible. I’ll definitely read more of Broch’s work and would confidently recommend The Death of Virgil to any with an artistic or academic interest in modernism. In doing this he was adhering to certain principles that he had outlined in an essay, “Joyce and the Present Age”, written in the previous year.
He even says his Georgics are useless, inferior to any expert treatise on agriculture. However, the overall effect of this is not one of imitation but one of creating a unique prose poem that has not seen the like anywhere else in the history of literature.

At times the novel can be quite bewildering, at others it can be nearly dreadful, but the strong brocb really make the confusion and the temporary frustration worth the while.
