Barthelme does this best in my humble opinion with Forty Stories, a lofty collection of stories of various lengths and dimensions. His non-sequiters became a little frustrating after awhile and I shrugged my shoulders more often.

Want to Read saving…. I had been stalking this book online for weeks, months even – plotting, trying to find a way in, ruminating, procrastinating but mostly delaying gratification. The surreal “On the Deck” is a frozen moment in time; it describes, on just two pages, things and people on the deck of a ferry, and is to literature what Reatos Magritte’s paintings are to visual arts. In short, this is a very good companion collection, but I wouldn’t recommend it on its own.
Narration is additionally a priority of Barthelme.
