I mean, a little boldness is refreshing in a Regency heroine, but Horatia seems like heyee eighth-grader who can be induced to do anything by being told that Mom doesn’t want her to do it. I have always thought highly of GH’s ability to create a character, some of which, indeed, I have gworgette for their revolting class attitudes etc eg Death In The Stocks but Penhallow is an absolute tour de force of character creation.

Now having read or listened to quite a few of Georgette Heyers novels, I must say – at the risk of ruffling many sensibilities — that I enjoy her work just a little better than Jane Austen’s.
