She avoids her suitors at all costs, and comes ,aren with all kinds of schemes to drive them away. Mostly, they used herbs as medicine. Catherine, Called Birdy is an engaging work of historical fiction that shows both the similarities and differences between our times and Medieval ones.

Her marriage fate changing through nothing but an act of god was believable, yet somehow I still felt myself thinking “really?? Her ingenuity in getting rid of prospective suitors is especially fun, though she’s irrepressible in every other context, too.

The period has rarely been presented for catherune people with such authenticity; the exotic details will intrigue readers while they relate more closely to Birdy’s yen for independence and her sensibilities toward the downtrodden.
