RUSSKA is a mighty novel that spans years of Russia’s history, people and culture from the days of the princes and tsars to the revolution and present. A well-written, episodic, dense, at times infuriatingly complex historical saga of Russia by the author of the similarly massive Sarum, which. With his second sprawling historical novel, Rutherfurd moves from his hometown Russka. Edward Rutherfurd, Author, Betty Prashker, Editor Crown Publishing.
It has the same feel as Sarum, of course, but it is a little harder for me to get into. It left me wondering how it is that humans have such an ability to create both incredible beauty and indescribable hell.
For me it remains his best work. Rarely does Rutherfurd allow wider events to take over the storytelling. I plan to do so now. Please provide an email address. After this we move onto Catherine and as with Londonthis is where the book really takes off. Thanks for telling us about the problem. Rutherfurd has indeed embraced all of Russia’ From the Houston Chronicle: I wasn’t sure about the format, which is best described as ten novellas and three short stories, following two families and their offshoots through hundreds of years.
This time, he has chosen to take on the geographically mighty Russia, telling its history from the second century AD through to and the end of Communism. Las conexiones entre personajes son tan constantes en los siglos y tan poco probables que la credibilidad se pierde por completo. Be the first to discover new talent!
Napoleon sought to conquer Russia, the Crimean War and the beginnings of Communist thought. Saw the barbarism of the first settlements by nomadic people, the cruelty of Ivan the Terrible, the pompous hypocricy of the court of Catherine The Great and the confusion and despair of the 19th century and the excitement and fear of the pre-revolutionary era.
Unfortunately, it just didn’t scratch my itch. I really had no clue on so many things.

Ivan the Terrible was the first Tsar of Russia who turned it into an empire worthy of the name. Tras haber llegado al final, siento que no ha merecido la pena en absoluto el esfuerzo, y que Rutherfurd resulta un autor pueril, al que desde luego tengo pocas ganas de volver a leer.

I have been caught up in other books and so it has kept me away from reading this one. But fortunately for Russia and the reader, Rutherfurd is a much better writer than Michener.
I haven’t found this the case at all – as long as you have an interest in the world around you I think that you can enjoy all of Rutherfurd’s books. I feel there was more history and character development in this one than in Sarum and I liked it better. It’s the fictional look at life in the previous rrutherfurd that draws you in and makes you pity Paul Bobrov, Sergei Romanov and Ludmilla Suvorin – our last generation of characters – for what they don’t even know they’ve lost.

A dark story set in the 13th century, during the terrible Tatar invasions. The primary storyline that finally emerges depicts three rival families who have ties in the quintessential village of Russka: Rutherrurd instance, we’re told that one character is “shrewd,” and everything he says is said “shrewdly”; also, Rutherfurd has a tendency to interpret events and make announcements like, “What happened next was her fault.
It does some set-up throughout the start of the book that makes more sense why he did it later down the road, so it gets more interesting.
However, revolutions are always double-edged swords and Rutherfurd writes about the darkest times in Russian History with sensitivity and objectivity. Author Did You Gutherfurd From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. For me it was just another slightly boring book – there are many more intriguing and better known out there eg.
I am a big fan of Edward Rutherfurd’s huge historical epics spanning the history of a place by linking it through the generations of several families.

The rusxka and the family tree at the beginning are invaluable. His characters are fleshed out and represent their respective eras. He does spend quite a bit of time on certain periods and glosses over others.

Book Review: Russka by Edward Rutherfurd
I finally got to the Ivan the Terrible chapter – which most reviewers agreed was when the story finally picked up and made the previous chapters worth plodding though. Warriors and hermits, boyars and serfs, romantic heroines and rich old ladies, fortune-builders and exiles – the characters in RUSSKA inhabit the rich, astonishing, evocative and contradictory world of forest and steppe, icon and axe, Orthodox faith and Jewish persecution, of gorgeous churches, magnificent palaces, and squalid villages; of Russian folk art and sumptuous opera, of Tolstoy and Lenin, Tchaikovsky and Rasputin.
Sometimes he’ll regress into his description of a character or a place, giving the reader a store russkz background information, and this description can go on for several pages before he brings you back.
The ending was weak; I didn’t feel like I had a handle on the Revolution as on the earlier eras, and would have liked to read more about the 20th century. Russia is, after all, a large place and there is only so much that we can cover.
