Editorial Reviews About the Author Nietzsche has been proclaimed the seminal figure of modern philosophy as well as one of the most creative and critically influential geniuses in the history of secular thought. A buffoon who got himself to be taken seriously.
I think this idea that we are not all “equally worthy” is where a lot of the misunderstanding of him as some kind of Nazi-sympathiser comes into play. As far as I understand him, he critizes the German’s most, as well as socialism. Then comes his chapter on Socrates.
He then chucks the entire realm of morality and religion under the concepts of imaginary causes. Martillazox book mostly deals with those “idols” in question, specifically the ones who placed abstraction above reality, calling it reason, leading to a degradation of natural instincts and the transcendence of weakness to strength; overall, to decadance of every kind martillzos calling it virtue. He is able to beautifully being angry at institutions, German society, and Christianity.
He finds the pagan practice of caste system more solid, more Aryan, more likely to produce great men than Christian morality. He praises Sallust, from whom he owes his aphoristic style. Nothing is off the table for deconstruction and criticism – he criticises democracy, the idea of equality that it gave birth to, and much other of the notions that we mostly take for granted. He was more in line with self-affirmation and the allowance that some people are stronger and more worthy of respect and social advancement than others, while recognising democracy to breed a poltical class of “flattering squanderers” who flatter the voting public and then squander the power their given as a result – some modern examples spring to mind!

Snuff. The 39th Discworld novel sees Sam Vimes investigating a countryhouse murder, and is Terry Pratchett’s fiftieth book. The fear and helplessness of a people that has been denied rights–or, for that matter, recognition. Things move along nicely, culminating in a breathtaking chase on a string of barges being flung about on a river in spate called Old Treachery.
And I found the ending part to be—odd. Pratchett describes how Vimes goes on a family holiday with little Sam and Lady Sybil. The Fifth Elephant Review of the 6th book: I used to read Pratchett for escape. Part of what makes it work is the constant running gag of how husbands have to defer to their wives on whether they disworld consuming certain things like bacon, cigars and other products that may shorten the lifespan but are still eminently enjoyable.
According to the writer of the best selling crime novel ever to have been published in the city of Ankh-Morpork, it is a truth universally acknowledged that a policeman taking a holiday would barely have had time to open his suitcase before he finds his first corpse.
The rest of the discworld books after that are great reads. Oct 24, Heidi Cullinan rated it it was amazing Shelves: I think his mad footnotes are there because he can’t stop his mind whirring, and our whirring minds go with him.
Snuff (Discworld, #39; City Watch #8) by Terry Pratchett
Fiction Terry Pratchett reviews. Meanwhile, young Sam ponders the nature of poo. Young Sam is a growing boy and an essential part of any Sam Vimes story these days as is Lady Vimes of course and he meets his literary heroine in Miss Felicity Beedle whose book The World of Poo is now available for you and I to purchase. That’s why they fucking call it art. Discworod by Paul Kidby.
But then he continued in a more thoughtful vein: They are human, with the possible exceptation of Nobby. In an ideal discwrld, I would say that Snuff should be compulsory reading for my country’s leadership. One of the things I like about the Discworld books is that the villains are people too. Sybil has a large support role, and it is always nice to see Sybil and Sam work together. Up on a literary character mountain top.
A battle ensues between Vimes and Stratford and as Stratford is knocked out and tied up. Except for the realpolitique that very few discwirld are actually punished.
After Vimes wins the fight, he arranges to meet with Jethro snudf Dead Man’s Copse on Hangman Hill at midnight, as Jethro has something to tell Vimes about the mistreatment of goblins. Lady Sybil has decided that Young Sam, now an inquisitive six-year-old, needs some fresh country air and healthy outdoor recreation at Ramkin Hall, the family’s country estate.
If I were Sir Terry, I would probably describe it as a twang and surround it with descriptors both profound and giggle-inducing at once. And Commander Sam Vimes of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch is on holiday in the pleasant and innocent countrysid According to the writer of the best-selling crime novel ever to have been published in the city of Ankh-Morpork, it is a truth universally acknowledged that a policeman taking a holiday would barely have had time to open his suitcase before he finds his first corpse.
Down in my gut I feel Commander Sam Vimes has had a great run but now he’s so over-powerful, so unbeatable, and full of so many powerful allies Vetinari, Lady Sybil, his unstoppable assassin-butler, the demon who lives in his head, every City Watch post ever, etc he’s no longer much of a joy to read.
One advantage of a continuing world full of people and creatures is that they can develop in a leisurely way. Still a really good book, and Sam Vimes still basically owns me. Even battling early-onset Alzheimer’s, Pratchet is as good as any 10 novelists fighting ennui and indigestion. Here we also have the tiniest of crimes and the greatest, although interestingly, the greatest is an individual murder, not genocide of a species. I have an Ankh Morpork passport and a couple of coins and one of these days I’ll be going there permanently, but until then I have Snuff to read.
They also trade in living beings: The last fifty pages dragged a bit. Vimes is still not comfortable with his status as the estate owner, and it is obvious that the local blacksmith isn’t either. I grew up with these books, started reading them when I was 10, and it’s a bummer to realize that a cherished part of your life and a very influential one, at that- most of my writing is based on doing my best to rip him off, hahaha could be drawing to a close.
It is also a darker Discworld novel and far better than Small Gods. There is a certain amount of grumbling, sir. In the end, thanks to his wife’s organisational skills and powers of persuasion, goblins are recognised as citizens by all major nations and rulers.
