This is one of the most readable technical textbooks I have encountered. Tanenbaum has an unhealthy habit of trying to bullshit his way through sections he doesn’t have a firm grip on himself, which was particularly apparent in certain sections on the Physical Layer. It helped a lot in understanding some of the basic concepts in networking.

Prepares students to deal with one of the most crucial topics in networking today: The Internet Transport Protocols: Example Data Link Protocols.

Want to Read Currently Reading Read. Computer Networks by Andrew S. Other than that, it’s a pretty solid textbook. The problem set is very useful. This greatest plus point of this book is that while Network topics are quite dry, but the text in this book is written in such a way that makes it quite interesting to read.

I learned my basic networking from it six years ago and have been using it as a reference ever since. Tanenbaum accomplished a very entertaining book with lots of examples, mixing technology and imagination he accomplished to create a classic.

Now, after 10 years in the IT industry I realized that I need to understand networking and came back to this book. All of that is complemented by “homework” at the end of each chapter, which often encourages to think outside of the box. In case one wants to follow up a certain chapter a suggested reading list is provided.

To me, it’s given something more. The Network Layer in the Internet. Thank you Dr Andrew S Tanenbaum! I was forced to read Tanenbaum in university and I hated it, partially because I didn’t know if it was relevant.
