Everyone felt so deeply from their point of view about what had happened and I interviewed such a broad range of people, from one of the Simi Valley jurists who let the cops go, to Kiki Watson [Henry Keith “Kiki” Watson], who was caught on tape involved with beating Reginald Denny, Reginald Denny himself, Daryl Gates, some of the cops, and then all kinds of people from all over Los Angeles.
Smith’s work is a wonderful look into a pressured and divided society at the breaking point. Written in the manner of a reality TV show; Twilight is like watching one half of an interview. That is to say it promotes that one race is superior to the other, whether it is white over black or black over white. Imagery is also what helps put the play under the genre of California Literature. Not only were some scenes just slapped on in random places, but to make it worst the scene dealt with the same problem the book went over about five scenes ago.
The play is composed of a series of monologues by real people connected directly and indirectly to the riots; the text of the monologues is taken verbatim from interviews that Smith had conducted with them.
It gives the perspectives of a former police officer, a witness to the beating, a white juror from the trial, and the smitb attorney.

If the book suffers from anything, it’s a sense that there are many many The first hand accounts of the LA Riots, transcribed in a faithful manner by Smith and translated to the stage are still fascinating in book form. For people who had witnessed police brutality first hand and yet could not find justice, this was the moment.

Angwles dislike books that are too one-sided because they never mention what the other side feel and what twiligt they are in their shoes. I feel like Smith just waiting for the morning of to put everything together and she took all her interviews with people and put them in a pile and turned that in.

I love that a school with Moravian’s emphasis on the arts would choose a theatrical piece that ties so well to one of the most important issues currently making headlines. This play–a document of various voices of people connected to the arrest, trial and riots– is powerful and insightful.

Anna Deavere Smith’s play demonstrates the human cost of letting inequality fester. This is the city we are living in. I would recommend deavvere play to anyone, but especially those who are unfamiliar with Rodney King and the riots.
This book will help those who were not born during the time of the riots gain a deeper understanding of the problems and feelings that contributed to the Los Angeles riots. Twilight doesn’t presume to find answers to these difficult problems; instead, the main lesson to be learned from qnna is that 20 years later, the questions it raises largely remain the same.
