Where in many of those other books you may only find a couple of gems scattered across each chapter, I found The Anatomy of Story to be packed wall to wall with helpful and useful information. It dug right into the meat of the matter of storytelling, but to be honest ‘Anatomy of a Story’ really did come off like little more than an autopsy at some points.

I think this might be one of my new favorite writing books. The foundations of story that Truby lays out are applicable to all writers, from novelists and short-story writers to journalists, memoirists, and writers of narrative non-fiction.

He starts with “it’s not just picking a genre”, and that’s as close as he gets. Although most of his examples are from movies, such as Tootsie, The Godfather, and Star Wars, Truby also draws from novels and plays, and his advice is applicable not only to the hopeful screenwriter but to the aspiring novelist as well. This is where you connect with an audience: Truby effortlessly articulates a multitude of concepts I’d only ever dimly, partly grasped, and pushes them far beyond what I’d ever imagined.
